During the County Mashinani consultative forums, a significant challenge affecting the residents of Kilifi County that emerged was the issue of land. In response to this, Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro authorized the establishment of a logistics committee tasked with investigating the land problems faced by Kilifi residents and proposing potential solutions.
In accordance with this directive, I participated in a meeting alongside the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Kilifi Dept of Lands, Energy, Housing, Physical Planning & Urban Devt, Hon. Jane Kamto, the County Attorney, Mr. Henry Lughanje, and a committee consisting of three representatives from each sub-county to address these issues. The main focus of the meeting was on the prevalent cases of missing title deeds, land ownership disputes, and absentee landlords.
The significant problem of missing title deeds has left thousands of Kilifi residents uncertain about their land ownership status and fearful of potential evictions due to the lack of proper documentation for their land parcels.
The county government is collaborating closely with the national government to expedite the processing of land documents. A crucial step in this endeavor will be the issuance of 5,000 title deeds to Kilifi County residents by the President, a move expected to bring much-needed relief to the affected individuals. The forum highlighted the county’s dedication to addressing these land issues in a comprehensive manner.
