International Widows Day

Company
I had the pleasure of participating in the commemoration of International Widows Day 2024 alongside CS Hon. Aisha Jumwa Katana and esteemed women leaders at Barani Secondary School in Malindi sub-county.
The purpose of this day is to encourage governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector to take action in advocating for the rights and recognition of the over 258 million widows worldwide. The main goal of this day is to mobilize resources and establish policy guidelines that empower widows and their families by providing educational and training opportunities, suitable employment with fair compensation, healthcare access, and safe environments free from violence and abuse.
As a government, we are committed to the social and economic empowerment of widows and their families through initiatives like facilitating affordable financial credit services through the County’s Wezesha fund, implementing cash transfer programs, creating employment opportunities for over 3500 women, supporting school feeding programs for orphans, and advocating for women’s rights, particularly regarding land and property ownership.
I encouraged the women to take advantage of government platforms and opportunities to contribute to community well-being and to consider joining women’s cooperative groups to further their empowerment.
