The Kilifi Department of Health and Sanitation Services, in collaboration with my Deputy Flora Mbetsa Chibule, established a significant partnership with the Kenya Association for the Welfare of People with Epilepsy (KAWE) and the Chandaria Foundation to launch a groundbreaking epilepsy facility at Malindi Sub-County Hospital, the first of its kind in Kilifi County.
Epilepsy in Kilifi County has long been associated with stigma, leading to a high number of untreated and undiagnosed cases, leaving a large portion of the population without access to proper care. Recent statistics from KAWE indicate approximately 6,000 reported cases of epilepsy in Kilifi, with many diagnosed individuals seeking treatment elsewhere at a considerable expense.
The primary goal of this initiative is to improve access to epilepsy treatment, meeting the healthcare needs of the local community. Further investments in the facility are currently under consideration, aligning with my commitment to ensuring accessible healthcare services for all residents of Kilifi.
